Works For Me – ID for kids

Earlier this month when we went to Spirit West Coast. Walter had a great idea of calling the hospital for a hospital ID bracelet to put on Ben (5) and Becca (2). The hospital gave us one for each kid. We wrote our name, our cell phone numbers (including area code) and the child’s first name. We wrote with a fine tip Sharpie marker and for 5 days the information stayed on the kids 24/7.
One tip I would have is to make sure to tell your kids if they get lost to show that to a security person. Unfortunately we had a situation where I thought Ben was with Walter and Walter thought he was with me (and a youth group kid told me that Ben went with Walter). As I was leaving our blanket area to use the restroom I saw my son riding around in a security golf cart! Ben had told them that his dad had gotten lost! Thankfully God’s protection was on my son and he went to a nice lady that took him to “lost and found”. As I went to Lost and Found to sign papers and release my child I showed them the id bracelet. Since Ben’s sweatshirt was covering it they never saw it. The people thought it was the best idea they had ever seen.
We will be taking hospital id tags with us on vacation from now on and this definitely Works for Me! Head on over to Rocks In My Dryer to check out more great ideas.

This is a great idea! I love it. Very clever. I’m definitely going to use this next time we hit the fair or water park. Sorry you had a scare with your little one. That must have gotten your heart beating!!

I think that is a great idea…and your son did good. I hear that you teach your kids to look for someone (rather than wait for someone to look for you) and try to give them ideas on who would be best. Someone who looks like security or that works there or a woman with kids is who works.

Great idea! The only tweak I’d make is to be sure the information was on the side of the bracelet that faces the skin – that way someone couldn’t read your child’s name from a few feet away. Make it easy enough to flip and read, for an emergency worker, but more difficult for someone who would seek to do harm.
With the name legible from a few feet away, it would be too easy for a perpetrator to cause a distraction for you, and call your child’s name to get her to help find a puppy, etc.

Great idea! My kids are preteens so they might not let me do that to them.
but I sure will pass this tip on to my mom friends with young kids.
